Creating solutions for fashion Industry factory waste fabrics
New York City EcoFest is a daylong expo that seeks to foster informed and interactive approaches to environmental issues. Addressing problems, discussing solutions, and mobilizing action is what EcoFest is all about.
Melissa Lockwood's collection of dresses is made from the most common fashion industry waste fabric shape, long narrow edge pieces.
These edges are cut off on nearly every stack of fabric before the pattern block is placed. This is done so the block can be squared on the fabric grain. These cutting are immediatly thrown away.
The 3 to 4 inches pieces that are even 50 plus feet long go directly to the landfills.
These fabric pieces that can be used to make clothing, rugs and other things.
Using these fabrics keeps it in use and out of the landfills, creating a regenerative solution replacing a system of waste and pollution.
